This was written for a friend, who suffered the beast of abuse, and now lives a life of beauty and compassionate usefulness for others.
Beauty in the Beast
Pain is a beast,
When we expect it least,
It roars,
And makes us cringe
With fear.
Its repulsiveness
Makes us want to turn
Or run the other way.
Pain is a beast,
Clothed in ugliness.
Turning, or running,
Or screaming in its face
Leaves us dead, while it lives on.
But beauty,
Reaching out with love and faith
Makes a miracle.
The mask of ugliness pain wore
Drops away.
We see what God saw all along;
The Prince of Peace,
Revealed to us through pain. ©2003 Linda Neff
