Life is like a garage sale. When we are finished with a certain stage of our lives, we often need to dispense with the remnants. These can be actual possessions (the baby stroller, the lawn mower) or outdated realities, emotional beliefs, false identities.
The benefits of going through this emotional, mental, spiritual “garage sale” are wonderful. Unprocessed or unrelinquished items in our lives sap the energy and wisdom we need to face the challenges of the next stage or new role.
I have never enjoyed garage sales. On the few occasions when we attempted to have one, I often looked at the items with some dismay. The chat with myself has gone like this:
“Here lie items that you once thought important, and cost you hard-earned money. They have collected unattractive dust and unwanted space to store. Now they will be sold for pennies on the dollar, if that much. Remember this next time you shop.”
More importantly, I need to remind myself not to “buy” items like bitterness and flawed values because no one else wants them either. And I need to get rid of them to face my future with freedom.
