It was a conversation through a curtain. For hours, we were nameless and faceless to each other. All we had in common was sharing a hospital room and experiencing discomfort. Nurses came and went to give the procedures each of us needed as day and night passed.
I left the facility after my surgery, just as she was being prepped for hers.
“I will pray for you today.” My words floated through the curtain.
“Thank-you.” Her words bobbed back to me.
No connection, no conversation is ever insignificant.
In their wonderful book, “Redeeming How We Talk” authors Ken Wytsma, and A.J. Swoboda say: “We need to begin to understand afresh how to communicate. In the end, our conversations are a piercing reflection of what we think of one another.”
Jesus made conversation, with His close friends, with His admirers, and even with His enemies. He asked and answered questions. He taught by example, of course, but also with words.
John wrote: “And the Word (Jesus) became flesh, and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth.”
May our lives and our conversations be full of grace and truth.
