For me, this will be “Heroes Month” when I will highlight four people who show(ed) courage and self-sacrifice in the service of others. (They likely would not subscribe to “Self” magazine!)
Harriet Tubman (Code Name: “Moses")
Led at least 70 slaves to freedom in about 13 trips from Maryland plantations to free States and to Canada.
As a young girl, she was accidentally hit on the head with a brick, and suffered headaches, seizures, and vivid dreams all her life.
In these dreams, and other times, she felt that God had given her direction and strength for her task of freeing slaves.
She was illiterate her entire life, but spoke publicly to honor women and their need for voting rights.
Her knowledge of plant remedies led to successfully treating people with dysentery.
She served in the Civil War as a nurse, scout, cook, and spy.
Yet she was denied Veteran’s compensation until 34 years later.
Harriet died at about age 91 in a Home for the Aged.
She was buried with full military honors.
“I have heard their groans and sighs, and seen their tears. I would give every drop of blood in my veins to free them.”
