Apparently, there is no word in Hebrew for “coincidence.” Perhaps a theology- based language does not need one, because there are no “random happenings” for God’s children. Everything belongs.
This, however, makes people indignant! How can disease, pain, or disappointment possibly be considered good in any way? Why doesn’t God intervene and fix everything? Or at least make life more comfortable and convenient. (Two of our dominant cultural values!)
Well, God and life are not the same. God is good and has a long-term plan. Life is often bad, sad, and seemingly capricious.
The Apostle Paul said to the Thessalonian believers: “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
We can give thanks “in” all circumstances, while not being grateful “for” all happenings.
Recently, I had the privilege of visiting someone who suffers from a debilitating, incurable illness. In a halting voice, she said, “I give God love for helping me.”
It was a hushed and holy moment.
