              Easter at Arlington National Cemetery

White stone markers,

Like soldiers standing at attention

In pristine rows,

Reflect the light of the sacrifice

But belie the bloodshed.

On that grisly Good Friday

Christ’s cross

Was blood-stained rough wood.

Now, on any ordinary day,

“Fashion” crosses

Are gold, silver, and jeweled

But belie the bloodshed.

Perhaps better to wear,

As a symbol of God’s power,

A flat, thick, gray stone,

A small replica of the one

Rolled away from Christ’s tomb.

Or perhaps a linen cloth

Like the ones left behind

When He rose from the grave.

Symbols help our hearts to rightly remember.
