For his book on regret, Daniel Pink did a worldwide survey on the topic. He found that regardless of culture differences, regrets usually fall into four main categories.

Foundation: the failure to have foresight and to be responsible, conscientious, and prudent

(not managing money well or saving for retirement)

Boldness: the failure to take action or to take risks (starting a business, moving to another country)

Moral: compromising our values or beliefs (telling a lie, having an affair)

Connection: not nurturing relationships (ending a friendship by neglect or by our words)

My thoughts on this author’s points:

I love that regret is a uniquely human emotion. God gives us awareness and grace to deal with our sins and mistakes. And since He is a Creator/Redeemer, He wants to give us beauty and joy for the ashes of mourning over past mistakes and sins.     Isaiah 61:3
